A new study of mobile device usage appears to show that visiting web sites is still a slightly more popular activity than using apps, and substantially more popular than visiting blogs or social media sites. This comes despite a massive proliferation of hundreds of thousands of apps for iPhone, iPad and Android in recent years.
The study showed that about 45% of all users browsed the web from their mobile device.
This is a strong sign that brands should pay as much attention to optimizing sites for mobile activity as they do to app development. Another strong signal for mobile marketers is in platform adoption, as Android continued its march with a whopping 45% market penetration.
The most popular activity for mobile users was text messaging (SMS), which exceeded 70%.
